The supplement industry around blood sugar is enormous and confusing. Every product claims to balance glucose, support insulin sensitivity, or reduce cravings. Most of them have thin or absent evidence. A few have research that is genuinely worth taking seriously. Here is what I found when I went through the studies myself, and what I actually use.
Berberine
Berberine has the most robust research of any supplement in this category. Multiple randomized controlled trials have shown it to be comparable to metformin — a first-line diabetes medication — in its effects on fasting blood glucose and HbA1c. The mechanism involves activation of AMPK, an enzyme that plays a central role in glucose and lipid metabolism, and modulation of the gut microbiome in ways that improve insulin sensitivity.
The evidence is strong enough that berberine is used clinically in parts of Asia as a pharmaceutical intervention for type 2 diabetes. The typical effective dose in the research is 500mg two to three times daily with meals.
Chromium
Chromium is an essential trace mineral that plays a direct role in how cells respond to insulin. Supplementation has been shown in multiple studies to improve insulin sensitivity, reduce fasting glucose, and specifically reduce carbohydrate cravings.

The craving reduction effect was the most noticeable thing for me personally. Within about three weeks of consistent chromium supplementation, the urgency of afternoon carbohydrate cravings decreased noticeably.
Magnesium
Magnesium is involved in over three hundred enzymatic processes in the body, including several that are central to glucose metabolism and insulin signaling. Magnesium deficiency is extremely common and is directly associated with insulin resistance. Supplementation has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, reduce fasting glucose in people who are deficient, and improve sleep quality.
What I Actually Use
After going through the research, I found Sugar Defender 24 useful as a daily formulation that covers several of these bases. The chromium and berberine components were specifically what I was looking for, and the consistency of taking one product rather than four separate ones has made the habit easier to maintain.
What Supplements Cannot Do

Supplements work within the context of what you eat and how you live. Berberine will not compensate for a diet built around refined carbohydrates. The research on all of these supplements shows benefits in people who are also eating reasonably and managing their overall lifestyle — not in people using supplements as the primary intervention while leaving everything else unchanged.
